Finding Calm
We don’t need a scientific study to tell us that stress levels are at an all-time high, however a recent survey by the American Psychological Association reports that we are more tense than ever.
Humans are designed to experience stress. Not all stress is bad, some types of stress can keep us alert, motivated and ready to avoid danger. Stress can become negative when someone faces continuous challenges without relaxation or relief. Without taking a break or a mindful moment, you can become overworked and stress-related tension can build-up, this is when stress can become an issue to not only your mental wellbeing but your skin health too.
Here are my top tips for finding a moment of calm in your day.
Exercise
It might seem contradictory but putting physical stress on the body through exercise can help relieve mental stress. Exercise helps to lower your stress hormones (cortisol), it also helps to release endorphins which are chemicals that improve your mood and act as natural painkillers. Sweat is also good for your skin. The sweat hydrates and the minerals and salt naturally exfoliate your body. Sweating purges the skin of bacteria, dirt, oils and impurities. Although sweat is good for your skin, it is important to cleanse your face and body shortly after your workout, as it reduces the amount of impurities that could be re-absorbed by the skin.
Routine
Whether it’s your skincare routine or simply getting up at the same time each day, research has shown that routines can play an important role in mental health as they help people better manage stress and anxiety. An easy routine to create is a skincare routine, take 5 - 15 minutes each morning and night to relax and unwind.
Make alone time a priority
Alone time is a time to reflect. Often, we get so caught up in daily life that we don’t have a moment to process what’s going on. Alone time is the perfect opportunity for you to catch up with yourself and how you’re feeling. My favourite weekly me-time task is applying a sheet mask as it forces me to slow down and relax. My weekly sheet mask helps to not only relax my mind, but it leaves my tired and dull skin hydrated and glowing. The Power Masque includes many powerful ingredients like Superox-C™ that boosts skin radiance and luminosity.
Hobbies that don’t involve a device
While I’m power masquing, I like to journal this has helped my stress levels immensely as it forces me to reflect on the positive aspects of each day. I have also recently taught myself how to knit which is a relaxing and relatively easy hobby to calm the mind.
